The World Day of Peace is celebrated as a Catholic initiative on January 1 every year. It coincides with the feast of the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.

The pope stresses the need to care for one another and to express tolerance in fellowship. Good moral values enable humanity not to outcast or disregard others and to build peace.

The world stands in need of peace. Not because of any threat of a world war. Rather, man’s inhumanity reaches heights of insanity resulting in religious fascism, fanatical fundamentalism, minority baiting, marginalisation of the poor, etc. These threaten us with the prospect of civil wars.

Unless the governments arrest such anti-human forces, peace cannot exist. We need pace in the hearts of human beings, peace in families, peace among fellow citizens, peace in the world.

We hope and pray that peace prevails in all aspects of our lives. Let all strive to create conducive atmosphere of pace.
