Vishwa Adivasi Diwas is not merely a day of celebration; it is an opportunity for all of us to recognize and honour the rich history, cultures, languages, traditions and contributions of Adivasi communities. In India, Adivasis are an integral part of our national heritage. In Jharkhand, their identity is deeply rooted in Jal, Jangal and Zameen—water, forest and land. The Santhal Hul of 1855 and the courage of Sidho, Kanhu, Chand, Bhairav, Phulo and Jhano remind us of their historic struggle for dignity, justice, freedom and the protection of their land and identity.
We must also be mindful of attempts to promote a false narrative that Adivasis are merely “Vanwasi.” Adivasi identity has its own history, dignity, heritage and cultural roots and cannot be reduced to a geographical description. Equally concerning are attempts to divide Adivasi society by creating a distinction between Christian and non-Christian Adivasis, particularly in the central tribal belt of India. Such efforts undermine the unity of communities that share a common history, land, culture and struggles. Diversity of faith should never become a cause for division among Adivasis.
Therefore, Vishwa Adivasi Diwas calls upon all of us to strengthen unity in diversity. Let us respect every Adivasi community and every faith, preserve our languages and cultures, protect Jal, Jangal and Zameen, and work together for justice, dignity and sustainable development. It is our collective responsibility to resist divisive narratives, foster unity and ensure that Adivasi identity and heritage remain strong for generations to come. Our strength lies in our unity, our heritage and our shared commitment to a just, inclusive and harmonious future. Johar!
