Sarhul is the main festival of the tribal population of Jharkhand.
It is a nature related festivity. The central focus is the worship of the sal tree (Shorea robusta). The tree is supposed to be the abode of the goddess ‘Sarna’ who protects people from natural calamities and disasters
The Festival is celebrated in Jharkhand state as th main State festival. In the states of Odish, West Bengal and Assam, tribals, owing allegiance to their former abode in Jharkhand, also celebrate the event.
Traditionally, it comes three days after the new moon in the Hindu month of Chaitra, or in April according to the English calendar.
When tender blossoms sprout on trees and green vegetation, it is time for Sarhul celebration. The festivity is mainly of the Chotangapur tribals, while the Santals have it in February as Baha(Flower)Festival.
The festival has many ingredients. Offerings to the deity, community fishing, cultural dance performance and sumptuous food menu. In the food menu, ‘handia’ or rice beer is essential ingredient.
