13th February is celebrated in India as the birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu, the Nightingale of India.
Naidu was born on 13 February 1879 in Hyderabad to scientist and philosopher Aghornath Chattopadhyaya and Barada Sundari Devi.
A poet and a staunch activist in India’s freedom movement, she became the first Indian woman President of the Indian National Congress. Naidu was also the first woman Governor of the United Province, which is now known as Uttar Pradesh.
