Eucalyptus is a fast-growing evergreen tree generally native to Australia but found in India too.
Eucalyptus oil is extracted from leaves through distillation process. It has strong aromatic scent.
As decongestant, it helps to relieve cough, cold, sinusitis, sore throat, and nasal congestion through inhalation of vapour mixed with warm or boiling water in the proportion of 1-2% eucalyptus and 98 % water.
Or boil the leaves and inhale the vapour.
Some cough medications include eucalyptus oil, including Vicks or VapoRub.
The oil is also used in cosmetic needs or in dental care preparations. The oil is used as insecticide too. It is a good mosquito repellent too. Rub a drop or two on your body. Also, the dry leaves can be burnt to dispel mosquito menace.
Due to its antibacterial and antimicrobial potential, it is used as mouthwash.
Eucalyptus helps in fighting bacteria which can cause tooth decay and periodontitis (gum decay).
It used to treat muscle and joint pain linked to strains, sprains, arthritis, bruises, and backache.
In heral oils used for massage or application as pain relievers, a few drops in such oils can strengthen their power.
Another good news is that eucalyptus tree produces and promotes positive energy. They are blessed if they have a few trees in their compound.
Those who may have skin allergy to eucalyptus oil may avoid using it. It should not be used too close to the eyes because it can use irritation.
It is not safe to use the oil orally, as it may produce poisonous reactions.
Eucalyptus oil adulterated with kerosene is often sold by antisocial elents. To test its purity, rum a drop on your skin
If it evaporates soon, it is pure. If some residue oil remains, that could be kerosene or some other adulterant.
