The International Day of Sign Languages invites us to promote and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users.
According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are more than 70 million deaf people worldwide. Surprisingly , more than 80% of them are in devloping or poor countries. It is reported that there are more than 300 different sign languages.
Sign languages are full-fledged natural languages. They are structurally distinct from the spoken languages.
International sign language is used by deaf people in international meetings and informally when travelling or when socializing.
