Drug menace is gripping the world like the vicious octopus. Millions of people, all over the world, are becoming victims of drug addiction and drug-caused diseases.

Drug adduction is closely connected with illicit drug trafficking, narco-trafficking and other drugs. Drug trafficking is said to be often associated with different forms of crime, such as money laundering or corruption.

The wide network of criminal gangs often takes the nations to ransom. Illicit trafficking routes are also used to traffick illegal firearms, weapons of war, diamonds, gold, ornaments , etc.

The UN, in setting up this day as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, proposes to work towards an international society free of drug menace and abuse.

People taking to substance abuse end up as victims of neurological, mental and psychiatric victims. It is estimated that 75% of youth in Asian countries and 95% in USA and European nations engage in substance abuse.

The common drugs are: cannabis, alcohol, heroin, methamphetamine, temazepam, cocaine, etc.

The largest illicit drug trafficking and drug affected countries are reported to be Syria, US, Mexico, Colombia, and West Balkans.

A U N report indicates that, globally nearly 200 million persons are using drugs such as cocaine, cannabis, hallucinogens, opiates and sedative hypnotics.

Surprisingly there are many shops in markets where drugs are sold. On the pavement in front of every school in cities there will be a stationary, grocery, or betel shop offering students drugs packed as sweets. Even in India’s rural areas such exercise is fast spreading.

Educators need to think of stopping such menace and of preventing their students from falling victims of drug abuse. Some schools have started student counselling sessions towards this. However effective they may be, getting such drug-pushing shops removed through the cooperation of guardians and civic authorities is advisable.
