Many birds migrate. They undertake distant and even intercontinental flights to engage in survival strategies. The need for feed is also an urge factor. Environmental and ecological factors may contribute to migration.
The theme for 2024 is: Protect Insects, Protect Birds.
Due to climatic changes and pollution, the population of insects declines. This affects migrating birds who feed on insects. Aerial insects such as flies and mosquitoes, moths, caterpillars, butterflies and beetles, and aquatic invertebrates constitute bird feed.
According to the UN Environment Program : “Insects are essential sources of energy for many migratory bird species, not only during the breeding seasons but also during their extensive journeys and greatly affect the timing, duration, and overall success of bird migrations.”
