Water is our elixir of life. All beings on earth need water for survival. Our human body is roughly 60% water. Earth’s fresh water is reported to be just one percent. The rest is saline.
We need water for consumption, for cooking, for bathing, for cleaning, for farming , for construction, for preparation of medicine, for offering to gods.
Earth needs water to sustain itself and to sustain us. Water bodies help transportation, fishing, farming etc.
This year’s theme is ‘Water for Prosperity and Peace’. Water is needed for development and progress. Water also has become the bone of contention. Some states block rivers and water passages so that other states go dry. Interstate rivalries occur in the name of water.
Water is also used as weapon. Today Palestinians are denied water and food by Israel because Israel blocks passage of vehicles with humanitarian aid to the starving Palestinians. Human cruelty can go to the extent of punishing people by denying them even a drop of water.
People pollute water by dumping waste into rivers and canals. Even oceans become victims of human depravity
Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poetic words should be considered instrucrive. ‘Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink anywhere? Is that the reason we are spending money lavishly to search for water on the moon, after polluting our water passages and water sources down here on mother earth?
