“On International Migrants Day, we highlight the urgent need for safe migration governance rooted in solidarity, partnership, and respect for human rights.”
(UN Secretary-General António Guterres)
Migrants are people on the move in search of security.
They may be workers, students, entrepreneurs, family members, artists, etc. Migration may be voluntary. It may be forced by
unemployment, poverty, natural disasters, economic challenges etc.
According to UN calculations, in 2020 there were 281 million migrants, amounting to 3.the global population.
According to World Bank Report, In 2023 about 2.3 percent of the world’s population—184 million people, including 37 million refugees—live outside their country of nationality.
Migrants can be great assets for development. There are two aspects that need consideration. Nations should provide opportunities for their citizens economically, socially and culturally so that people remain in their home base with security.
If they move out, host communities/states/ countries should facilitate a process to use their talents beneficially.
It is predicted that, “Because of demographic divergences and climate change, migration will become increasingly necessary over the next decades for countries at all income levels.” (World Bank)
