The UN adopted the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others on December 2, 1949.
Since 1995, December 2 is kept as International Day for the Abolition of Slavery.
Slavery exists. Not abolished yet. It exists in many forms.
Different types of modern slavery are human trafficking, child labour, bonded labour, prostitution, even migrant labour, etc.
Today, modern slavery and human trafficking are reported to be a billion-dollar business with a global profit running upto $150 billion plus.
United Nations’ reports point out that slavery traps over 40 million people around the world. One in four children get victimized globally.
Vulnerable groups in society become easy target for modern slavery. Such groups include tribal minorities, indigenous peoples, and those who belong to groups cosidered low caste.
Victims also include those who can’t fight back. These victims are children, women, and those with mental illness or physical disability.”
Educators, legislators, governments, NGOS, etc. have a big role in addressing the issue of modern slavery.
