“Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world’s cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human.”
(UNESCO)
In 1996, the UN General Assembly adopted the Resolution proclaiming 16 November as International Day for Tolerance.
The Declaration affirms that “tolerance is neither indulgence nor indifference. It is respect and appreciation of the rich variety of our world’s cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. Tolerance recognizes the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others. People are naturally diverse; only tolerance can ensure the survival of mixed communities in every region of the globe.”
Our present world, in many respects, is one of growing intolerance in many nations. Crimes of discrimination, crimes against humanity even by goverments indulging in ethnic cleansing, crimes against minority groups and communities, religious fundamentalism spewing hate speeches, abusing others, denying people their right to live etc. are crude forms of intolerance.
One nation not allowing people of another nation their statehood is paramount intolerance. An intolerant Hamas killed 1200 Israelis on 7th October. It is intolerance. An intolerant Israel retaliates by killing 12000 Palestinians. What do you call it?
Whether you support Israel or Hamas, call a spade a spade. Why innocent should be made victims?
Conscience is buried and on its grave political leaders erect their arrogant towers which will one day crumble.
Let tolerance be taught in schools, starting with playschools and kindergarten. Education should instil in our children not just tolerance, but also appreciation of others, other communities, irrespective of colour, creed or culture.
“Christian, Jew, Muslim, shaman, Zoroastrian, stone, ground, mountain, river, each has a secret way of being with the mystery, unique and not to be judged.
