International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
The ozone layer around our planet can be compared to a blanket which protects us.
This layer is a fragile shield of gas between the sun and the earth. It protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the rays of the sun. Hence, it helps to preserve life on the planet.
Undesired climate change results from the harm done to this layer through gases and chemical substances which we produce on the earth.
Ozone layer protects human health, flora and fauna, and ecosystems by limiting the harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching the Earth.
The Montreal Protocol instructed the nations to pay serious attention to preserving the ozone layer. Finalized in 1987, it is a global agreement to protect the stratospheric ozone layer by phasing out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances.
The protocol encourages investment in alternative technologies. Initially signed by 46 countries, the number has risen to 200.
We run factories. We do quarrying and mining. We destroy forest. We pollute water, ocean and atmosohere. The gases and chemicals that are produced by mines, factories, vehicles, resorts, hospitals, hotels, establishments, air conditioners, airplanes, our own kitchen etc. have harmful effect on the ozone layer like a worn out blanket with pores.
The danger signals are drastic climate changes, increasing heat, drought, diseases, destruction of flora and fauna etc. and minimizing life on the earth.
The ozone layer helps to filter out harmful ultraviolet radiation which is associated with an increased prevalence of diseases like skin cancer and cataracts, reduced agricultural productivity, and disruption of marine ecosystems.
If people are conscious of these and take positive action, less harm will be done to the ozone layer . We need to protect our planet Earth. Then only we can survive. Only a very few privileged may go the moon for safety. But the rest of us are destined to live on our mother Earth. Live and let live!
