Today is the world social Justice Day. In fact, does the term “Social Justice” still continue to make some sense to us? Social Justice is a concept which defines fair relations between an individual and the society. In terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and other privileges. It is an international day of celebration which is to spread awareness about the concept of Social Justice. The day is for making an effort and try to go to the root cause of issues like poverty, exclusion, gender inequality, human rights and unemployment. This day pinpoints the social justice issue spread around the world and people join hands to look into solutions and make amendments. The world social justice pledges to provide equal distribution of income to all employees and greater access to resources via equity and equality.
India with its rich cultures, languages and religions is proud of its diversity. At the same time, there have been moments where the people of different communities, castes and religions specially the minorities and the poor were looked down upon and were made victims of various social injustices. It is in this scenario especially at the time of our independence, issues like inequality, racism, untouchability and poverty prevailed on a larger scale and impacted the constitution- makers. Hence terms like socialist, Secular, Democratic and Republic made their way into our Preamble.
Every society faces its own set of problems when it comes to dealing with social justice in India. But one unavoidable challenges is the widespread economic disparities and the living conditions of millions of Indians which cannot be overlooked.
There are a few challenges in Indian society which continue to draw our attention and invite us to eradicate them from it’s root. One among them is rigid caste system. The main factor which causes a threat to our social stability and peace are the caste prejudices as well as the nonstop discrimination against the lower caste. The second problem being the gender inequality. The gender which suffers the most is the female gender. If we look at the categories of deprived communities, women are counted as the most deprived group. A liberal society should not discriminate among men and women in historic, social or economic conditions. The third issue being social and economic deprivation. This problem needs to be addressed as India is suffering from a lot of issues like social and caste discrimination, lack of basic necessities, economic crisis as well as issues of unemployment. An equal and fair distribution of resources can only can help to deal with this problems. However, all of these problems mentioned above are complex and crucial.
For a peaceful and prosperous coexistence, social injustice needs to be eradicated. You and I need are instruments for a change. Let us pledge ourselves to make our world, country and society more humane and just.
