World Patient Safety Day is observed annually on 17 September.

The aim is to raise global awareness about patient safety in health care system.

It is one of 11 global public health campaigns earmarked by WHO.

The need of caring for patients is of prime importance. Patients need to be safe in the hands of doctors, nurses and technicians. Let no patient be treated as guinea pig with placebo medicine or for experimental purpose.

In this competitive world where health care system gets highly privatised and professionalised, the poor often get marginalised. While private hospitals are thriving, public services in government hospitals are crawling. One sees quite many government doctors having a private business outside government hospitals.

Even in private hospitals and clinics doctors prescribe so many tests and refer patients to certain prearranged centres as an exercise of collusion for cash collection.

Often government arranged ambulances are not available for transferring patients.

Let World Patient Safety Day make health promoting agents became aware of using their professional talents for humanitarian cause and not for plying a private trade.
