16 September is designated by the UN Assembly as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The Earth’s ozone layer protects all life from the sun’s harmful radiation. On the other hand, our human activities damage this protecting shield.

Ozone is a molecule that contains three oxygen atoms. The Ozone layer is damaged by heat, pollution by dust, smoke and gases. The less this layer is protected, damage to crops and vegetation will happen. Skin cancer and cataract rates are said to increase.

It is not just to remain safe and healthy as far as human species is concerned. Care of the earth and care of the universe are our human responsibilities. The Creator has entrusted these responsibilities to us. ‘Lead Kindly light!”
