Every culture is unique. It has its own identity. It needs space to grow.

Every culture has some values or nuances to contribute to other cultures and for world development. That is where dialogue takes place. That is where ‘give and take’ happens.

Today, in a democratic world set up, there is no space for a superior culture. A majority community in a country cannot, by any means, impose its culture on people or community of other cultures.

Food is culture. So is dress. So are traditional customs and habits. No one can impose their food habits or dressing habits or mythical beliefs on others.

Without dictation or domination, there needs to be room for dialogue among cultures for peaceful coexistence, for progress and development of people.

Our cultural diversity is the common heritage of humanity. It is a source of renewal of ideas and societies, through which we open up to others and craft new ways of thinking. This diversity provides opportunities for peace and sustainable development.’  Message from Ms Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, on the occasion of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.
