The World Red Cross Red Crescent Day is celebrated on 8 May each year. 

This date marks the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant, who was born on 8 May 1828. Dunant was the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.

There are 190 recognized National Societies, which means one in almost every country

Aims and objectives

  • Aid to the sick and wounded members of the Armed Forces
  • Maternity and Child Welfare.
  • Junior / Youth Red Cross.
  • Nursing and ambulance work.
  • Relief during epidemics, earthquakes, famines, floods and other disasters,
  • The establishment and maintenance of peace
  • The improvement of health, prevention of diseases and mitigation of suffering. 

The theme for 2021 celebration is: ‘Unstoppable’. It is a very appropriate in the context of the Covid pandemic upsurge.

Today we salute the Red Cross founder Henry Dunant who founded  the Society for a noble cause for humanity’s sake. We salute all Red Cross members and volunteers all over the world for their committed service and fellow feeling.
