In today’s Covid impacted world it is imperative to take stock of the condition of women and children as we celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child.

In this context, the statement of the United Nations is very instructive.

“How COVID-19 Impacts Women And Girls. A profound shock to our societies and economies, the COVID-19 pandemic underscores society’s reliance on women both on the front line and at home, while simultaneously exposing structural inequalities across every sphere, from health to the economy, security to social protection. (United Nations)”

Even as we preach across religions about the equality of male and female persons, inequalities exist in many aspects. Religious fundamentalism, atrophied customs and customary habits in treatment of women, rape and murder of girl children and women, dowry menace and dowry related crimes on women, rising instances of illiteracy of girls and women, dumping women into second rate positions in families, offices, in  public and private spaces, etc. are the order of the day.

Politicians wax eloquent on such celebratory occasions by vomiting unconvincing speeches and confabulations. But, many of them connive with the police and terrorist forces to terrorise and derecognize women. Fast track courts are a rarity. Cases in normal courts drag on at snail’s speed. Women languish under male predominance and ill treatment.

We need honest and law abiding political leaders to ensure implementation of laws on rights and freedoms of the female section of our society.
