‘Depression: Let Us Talk’ is the theme of 2017 World Health Day.
The Day is sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) for global health awareness.
Depression can strike anyone anywhere, all ages, and all walks of life. It is characterized by persistent sadness; no interest in life, no interaction with others. It affects physical and mental health. Other symptoms can be Loss of energy, change in appetite, lack of sleep, moods, anxiety, reduced concentration, indecisiveness, restlessness, and feeling of uselessness, or feeling of rejection. At worst, it can lead to inflicting self wounds or suicide.
It is mostly aggravated by modern style of living. People become addicts to drug, sex, corruption of mind, looking for power, wealth and glory etc.
Depression can and should be treated. Talking therapy is very much recommended. Psychological or even psychiatric help may be needed.
Healthy family life is very important. In broken families depression can invade. Undisciplined children with wayward values can get stuck with many problems and finally end up in depression.
