The International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation is an awareness campaign to end a harmful practice that violates girls’ and women’s rights.
FGM- Female Genital Mutilation
FGM stands for Female Genital Mutilation. February 6 is set apart to as the day to express zero tolerance to the inhuman terror of female genital mutilation. According to W.H.O about 120 to 140 million girls and women have been subject to FGM and 3 million are at risk every year to this atrocity.
FGM relates to all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injuries to the female organs for non-medical or unscientific and cruel cultural habits. It is an abuse of human rights. It causes various serious complications such as bleeding, infection, trauma, psychological shock, septicaemia, fractures, and even death.
It is inhuman, atrocious, against all principles of humanity. It is violation of human right to life. It is cruelty to women and violation of women’s right to life and growth. It is a maniac patriarchal assertion over womanhood.
FGM needs to be condemned by all and the U.N. should compel such practising countries to stop with immediate effect such cruelties. The U.N. should even declare sanctions against such governments which encourage or do not prevent FGM.
