The Government of India declared 26 November as the Constitution Day. On this day in 1949, the Constituent assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, and it went into effect on 26 January 1950.

After thirty years of November 26, 1949, the Supreme Court Bar Association declared this day as National Law Day. This day the basic principles with which the Constitution is adorned are remembered and honoured. They are the rule of law, independence of the Judiciary, fundamental rights, independence of legal profession and Human Rights. The Supreme Court of India is the defender of the Constitution.

India’s Constitution is the lengthiest constitution in the world.

There is much to be desired about the legal practice. Exorbitant fees demanded by lawyers are a burden on ordinary citizens. Legal aid for the poor is in poor condition in many lower courts. Lengthy procedures in the court cause despair and anger among citizens. Much more needs to be done for delivering speedy justice.
